IMMEDIATE POST-EXTRACTION DENTAL IMPLANTS
Post extraction dental implants are placed after the damaged tooth has been extracted. With this technique, the space left by the recently extracted tooth is used to place the implant. This reduces waiting time, medication and the number of interventions required.
There are two types of post-extraction implants:
Primary immediate implants, which are those that are inserted in the same surgical act as the exodontia, when the remaining bone is sufficient to ensure the primary stability of the implant.
Secondary immediate implants, or recently implanted implants, which are inserted 6-8 weeks after extraction, when the soft tissues have already healed, allowing correct mucogingival coverage of the alveolus.
When are post-extraction implants indicated?
1. Extraction of a temporary tooth.
When there is agenesis of the permanent tooth, i.e. there is no tooth waiting to replace the milk tooth.
2. Tooth avulsion
The tooth is knocked out of its place by trauma.
3. Tooth replacement without the possibility of treatment.
For example deep caries, tooth crack or tooth root fracture.
4. Periodontal pathology
When periodontal disease is not active
When can a post-extraction dental implant not be placed?
It is not possible to perform the implant after extraction:
1. In teeth with apical lesions or active periodontal pathology.
2. If there is insufficient bone.
3. When there is an extensive gingival defect.
Frequently asked questions
No, inserting the implant does not hurt, it is performed under local anaesthesia just like the extraction. You may feel some “pressure” when the tooth is extracted, but not pain.
In addition to the reduction of surgical times:
- Bone and soft tissue patrimony is better preserved.
- The extraction provides vascularisation that is very favourable for the bone healing and regeneration process, reducing treatment time.
- Less heat is generated in the surgical process
- Implants can be placed in the ideal position, with less potential for bone resorption of the residual socket.
The procedure is more complex and requires an experienced implantologist. In our dental clinic in Puerto de la Cruz we have a qualified team with many years of experience.
It may require fillings and/or membranes and present a greater difficulty of first anchorage.
This technique is usually performed on anterior teeth or canines because they bear less chewing load than molars and are more aesthetically compromising.
